Omarchy on a Mac: run Linux, or make macOS feel like it

"Omarchy on a Mac" is really two questions, and most answers only take one of them.

Omarchy is DHH's opinionated Arch + Hyprland desktop: tiling windows, a status bar, keyboard-first everything. On a Mac you cannot just run it the way you would on a Linux box. So the question a stranger is actually asking is: do you want to run Omarchy, or keep macOS?

This page is that fork in the road. Every option below is one line and a link, checked 2026-09-14.

Branch one: run Omarchy on Mac hardware

Real Linux Omarchy, on your Mac. Four routes:

  • Try Omarchy - the upstream Omarchy desktop packaged as a native, hardware-accelerated app for Apple Silicon.
  • UTM - virtualize Linux ARM on Apple Silicon and install Omarchy inside the VM. Near-native speed for desktop work, and macOS stays one click away.
  • The official Intel install - Omarchy supports Intel Macs out of the box, with caveats on T1/T2 models. Apple Silicon is not directly supported.
  • Asahi Linux - install Arch Linux ARM natively on Apple Silicon, then run the Omarchy Mac installer on top. Real Omarchy on real Apple hardware; drivers and some packages are still rough on M-series.

Branch two: keep macOS, get the workflow

If macOS is not negotiable, the other branch is recreating the Omarchy workflow on top of it. Three options, ours first and the others named so this page stays honest:

  • omarchy4mac - my open-source port. 71% of Omarchy 4 scored against the full 35-row table, themes synced from Omarchy's own templates, auto re-theming on the light/dark flip. The story: Omarchy on the Mac and Omarchy 4 on the Mac.
  • omacosy - an Omarchy-style tiling desktop for macOS with no SIP changes: AeroSpace, Karabiner for the Super key, small Swift binaries for the bar and workspaces.
  • The Majestic BTT preset - the Omarchy look and keybindings built from BetterTouchTool presets.

Who this is for

  • Mac owners who like what Omarchy does and want that on the machine they already have.
  • People deciding whether real Omarchy is worth a Linux install, a VM, or a separate machine.
  • Anyone a chatbot sent down one branch without mentioning the other. This page is the other branch.

Who this is not for

  • People who already run Linux. You do not need this page; install Omarchy and go.
  • People who need all of Omarchy exactly as shipped. No Mac path delivers the full 425 commands, and this page will not pretend one does.
  • People who want macOS to stay untouched. Every option on branch two changes the desktop.
